Of the 13 Greek words translated to worship in the King James version PROSKUNEO is the most expressive and colorful word in the group. Etymology is used to describe a particular words origin, history, development in current Idiomatic usage. In English worship, as David Ingles point out in the word Bible, was an old Anglo-Saxon word WERTHSCRIPE Which eventually became the word worthship. Worth has to do with value; ship is a suffix denoting a state or condition. Compare other words such as courtship, friendship, Township, scholarship and fellowship.
The word PROSKUNEO has an interesting background. Pros means in the direction of or towards and kuneo is a Word for kiss. At one time it was a Word of warm affection describing a puppy kissing the hand or crouching down at the feet of his master. Proskuneo has an eastern usage describing kissing the ground in the presence of a potentate or bowing or in obedience before ruler. The word was used to describe the reference, respect, homage and adoration given by an individual to a person of high rank. Proskuneo, easily became the new testament word for offering worship to the divine being it is the adoration word, gesture, prayer, confession songs of praise and thanksgiving it that extols God the father in Jesus the son. Strictly speaking, worship is the occupation of the soul with God himself. The word appears 59 times in the New Testament and 24 of these are in the book of Revelation in Revelation the hymns make use of every very language and ideas. They constantly find new titles of dignity with which to praise God. You scribe to him the most exalted merits and attributes such as eternity, owner, on the potent, wisdom, holiness, Power, etc., in an attempt to confess his name. To all these hymns the runs a glorious universal strain. Frequently this takes the form of a loyal acclamation, though aren't worthy.
Time has come when formal and outward worship can no longer be excepted as true worship. The ceremonies, offerings, pilgrimages to particular sacred places, are not the highest form of worship. They are not the worship God seeks. He wants that homage of our heart, not the natural heart of the flesh the heart of the renewed spirit.
Forms, posture, sacrifices, sacraments, liturgies, holy places, holy days, maybe means to a worship… But as forms and expressions they are not worship. They may hinder actual worship such as God seeks. It is only the spirit of a man communing with God that is true worship. Look at scriptures; " but as for me, I will come into your temple protected by your mercy and your love; I will worship you with the deepest awe. " Psalm 5:7
